Road Runner figures out how the motors should be powered to follow the path, and computes the position of the robot using odometry in order to make adjustments according to the actual speed and travel of the wheels. With Road Runner, you can specify complex paths for your robot to travel including start and finish orientation and position. With a good navigation system, you can focus more on giving the robot instructions on where to go and what to do instead of how to get there.
